SPRINKLER HYDRAULICS And What It's All About, 3rd edition

SFPE is putting the finishing touches on the release of the third edition of Sprinkler Hydraulics And What It’s All About. The third edition was updated by Russ Fleming, former president of the National Fire Sprinkler Association. Fleming is also a past SFPE president and SFPE Fellow.

SPRINKLER HYDRAULICS And What It's All About, 3rd edition

This book provides guidance to engineers, engineering technicians and code enforcement personnel on fire sprinkler system hydraulic calculations, by hand or with a computer. Covered topics include:

  • Calculating sprinkler discharge
  • Estimating pressure losses due to elevation
  • Friction loss in pipe
  • Discussion on applying “C” factors
  • Underground fire service mains
  • Losses from fittings & valves
  • Backflow preventers
  • Velocity pressure
  • Establishing the hydraulically most remote area
  • Water supply
  • Looped and gridded systems

Wass’s Sprinkler Hydraulics, originally published in 1983, was based on the 1980 edition of NFPA 13. The second edition, Sprinkler Hydraulics and What It’s All About, was published in 2000 but was only partially updated to the 1999 edition of NFPA 13The third edition has been updated to the 2016 edition of NFPA 13.

Fleming also provides the Forward to the 3rd edition. “Sprinkler Hydraulics is Harold Wass’s legacy, his gift to the fire protection community. It is one of a very few texts dealing with the subject of hydraulic calculations for sprinkler systems and remains the best available.”
