New Exams for Inspection & Testing of Water-Based Systems (ITWBS)

Same Rigor, Streamlined Process and Lower Cost

In 2011, NICET transitioned the ITWBS program from the Work Element format to the Standard Model that is now used for all NICET certification exams. At that time, customers were skeptical that a single exam per level would work for this program. So, we created multiple exams per level-- two at Level I, three at Level II, and two at Level III for a total of seven exams that must be passed to meet the Level III requirement. Once the new format was established, customers expressed dissatisfaction with the time and expense for a program with this many exams. During our routine update, NICET began analyzing exam data to see if we could improve the process while maintaining accuracy of exam results. We found a better way.

Starting December 1, 2019 NICET will begin offering one exam per level for ITWBS exams. The general content and rigor will be the same; but instead of multiple short exams, we will now offer a single, longer exam at each level. This will provide the following cost savings:

Level I – Save $120 ($350 to $230)
Level II – Save $255 ($555 to $300)
Level III – Save $105 ($460 to $355)
All Three – Save $480 ($1,365 to $885)

In addition to the cost savings, scheduling will be simpler, and time spent on the exams will be reduced.

This change also includes an update to newer codes and standards. Please visit the ITWBS Program Page to see the latest Content Outlines, Reference information and more.

We will allow transition time for test takers who have already started the multi-exam process. If a candidate has already passed at least one, but not all exams at a given level, they may choose to take the remaining exams for that level through December 2020.  OR, candidates can voluntarily choose to switch to the new, single exam for that level.  Please note that if you decide to switch to the single exam per level, you will not receive any credit for the partial exams already passed at that level – AND – you will not be able to switch back to multiple exams at that level.  Additionally, when candidates complete the multiple examination requirement at any level, they will automatically switch to the single examination requirement at the next higher level.

The current improvement and update to this program would not be possible without industry support, and the dedicated subject matter experts and practitioners that volunteer their time and expertise to the program development process. We appreciate your commitment and shared mission of quality and safety through a qualified workforce. Thank you!
